How I wish!

This week sees the central Glow team continue their marathon with Mentor training in Scottish Borders, East Renfrewshire and event to kick things off in South Ayrshire. Next week sees the team take Mentor training in Orkney and Argyll & Bute, plus a return to Inverclyde to build on the work started there.

We wouldn’t have it any other way though. Mentor training is the ideal opportunity to make connections with people on the ground in local authorities and talk practically about how Glow can be used in the classroom. The best bit about Mentor training has to be near the end of day two though, as we really focus on planning next steps. Where local authorites have done this we have seen the clearest progress, and as a result we now factor this into each training event.

Watch out on the GlowScotland blog to keep up to date with the thoughts of the team as they take these sessions. Better still, why not enter into discussion with them and link up with other Mentors using Glow around the country?

After listening to John Davitt at TeachMeet08, Tom Barrett and I had a quick throwaway conversation about a great, simple idea. Using a ‘trackstick‘ that keeping track of their movement, kids in class could spell out a word and send it to another class – a kind of spelling challenge if you will. They could take their pictures, tag them with some unique tag and share them with others.

As I’m typing this, Tom is twittering about playground art, or cool Google Earth artwork.

What does anyone else think? Anyone up for a cool challenge with their class?

working on the LTS stand.

As with previous years, I thought it might be a good idea to share what I’m up to at the Learning Festival?

Wednesday
9:30 – 10:15 C2A – Carron 1: Effective Learning & Teaching in action with Glow
11:00 – 12:00 LTS stand
12:30 – 13:15 C2B – Carron 2: Glow and e-mentoring: supporting development, 2st century style
15:00 – 17:00 LTS stand
17:45 – late(!) Forth: Teachmeet ‘08

Thursday
09:00 – 15:00 LTS stand (with a few breaks in between!)
16:00 – 16:30 Scottish Education Village: SLF Extra in Glow

It would be great to catch up with others if you’re coming to the Festival this year? Get me anytime on twitter @whereisab, or come along to that stand and find out what’s happening with Glow.

Apparently this year has the biggest number ever pre-registered – add to that the industrial action scheduled for Wednesday, and this event could be even more huge than usual!

Over the coming year we’re going to see a huge growth in the number of live chats and web conferences taking place in Glow. What better way to kick things off for the Scottish Learning Festival this year than to have the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop take part in a live chat in Glow?

You can join the Cabinet Secretary in a live discussion on Wednesday 17 September from 5.30pm until 5.55pm to exchange views, to chat, ask questions, or share your experiences.

You’ll need a Glow login to take part, and can find the chatroom and discussion forum here.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity – if you are involved in Scottish Education and don’t yet have a login to Glow, get in touch with your Key Contact to find out more about their rollout plans for Glow in your area.

<Cross-posted at glowscotland.org.uk>

New to the National Site of Glow is an area entirely devoted to the Scottish Learning Festival, called SLF Extra.

Why SLF Extra? Well, we think we’ve added ‘extra’ into this years festival, using the tools and functionality that Glow offers its users.

In SLF Extra you can take part in discussions, Glow Chat and Glow Meet sessions for many of the Keynote, Spotlight and Seminars in the lead up to, during and after the festival in Glasgow’s SECC. Can’t get away from your establishment to take part in the festival? Well, using Glow, this year you can take part without having to journey to Glasgow. Why not head over to SLF Extra and ask the presenter a question relating to their topic? If you’re going to the festival, don’t miss out on seminars or keynotes that you’d like to attend because of scheduling conflicts – why not join in through Glow? Better still, don’t miss out on the opportunity to continue discussion around the topic after the event – SLF Extra in Glow makes this simple.

We’ve also got a brand new feature to show in Glow – Conference in Pictures. Artist Graham Ogilvie draws topical themes from the conference to spark discussion. Have a look at the examples we’ve got online already and have your say on the issue. You’ll only find these in Glow.

Are you going to the festival and want to talk to others about how they are using Glow? If so, then why not check out the Glowing Lounge. It’s a place at the festival exclusively for Glow users to share what they are doing in Glow with others and make connections.

SLF Extra – Scotland’s largest education event just widened its reach.
