As you are no doubt aware, each of our newly appointed Glow Mentors has been given a blog to keep up to date with their activities. You can find links to all of these blogs here. For the majority of our Mentors, the blogosphere was completely new, and to no great suprise it takes a while to get into the habit, and a lot of reading of other blogs to understand how best to flesh their own ones out.

Yesterday, Catherine MacMillan posted about how she and her pre-5 pupils are using digital cameras. What a brilliant, simple illustration of how to use ICT seamlessly in the curriculum. Dead easy idea though, eh? I wonder how many times in the future of our kids education, they will be ‘taught again’ how to use a digital camera? We seriously need to learn how to take account of prior learning and truly incorporate this into our childrens development.

Richard Biggart was speaking about a similar thing the other day too. He is meeting with the local Primary Head Teachers to investigate using the IC3 standard to ensure that the secondary school is aware of the kids prior knowledge in the area of ICT. That sounds like a good example of joined up thinking to me – as a by product, the kids get an internationally recognised certificate in computing competence, and the teachers in the secondary don’t have to ‘re-teach’ (even though they should know they don’t have to!)

Early days, but it’s good to see what our Mentors are up to.

UPDATE: It’s worth pointing out (before I get my knuckles wrapped (should that have a ‘w’?) that Dunoon Grammar is not the first school in A&B to look into this. Indeed, Islay High as part of their ‘School of Excellence’ project are doing just this already, and Lochgilphead High have also been presenting students for this qualification. Great to see things filter out though, eh?
